DANVILLE, Va. (WRIC/WSET) — A Virginia mom wants your help to celebrate her son’s sweet 16.
Tate Malone has cerebral palsy and epilepsy. His birthday is just a couple weeks away and his mom, Tambra Malone, of Danville, wants him to know that he has the community’s love and support.
“I thought it would be good for the community to get to come out and get to know him and know more about his condition,” Malone told 8News affiliate WSET. “I want to encourage others not to be trapped inside just because they have a condition.”
Though Tate is limited in his abilities to communicate, he is much like any other 15-year-old.
“He likes to listen to music, especially gospel music,” Malone said. “And he also likes Sam Smith.”
Caring for Tate is a full time job for his mom. It became even more stressful in the past four years since Tate’s dad was diagnosed with a brain condition that left him needing care as well.
“We were just brainstorming for his birthday and he [Tate] said he would like a birthday party and birthday cards,” Malone said. “He likes people to read to him and he loves bright colors.”
So far, Malone has received a few phone calls, she said, but her ultimate goal is to have community members attend Tate’s birthday party this Saturday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m. at the Camp Grove Baptist Church in Danville, Virginia.
If they can’t attend, Malone is asking the community to help Tate celebrate by sending him birthday cards. Tate’s 16th birthday is Sunday, Aug. 30.
“He told me he wanted birthday cards and a birthday party, so I’m just supporting him and reaching out to the community to make that happen,” Malone said. “I want to let him know he can do anything and he can be anything.”
Malone is asking people to mail birthday cards for Tate to the following address:
