According to Virginia State Police, a 2007 Hyundia Elantra was traveling north on Belle Meade Road when it crossed over into the southbound lane and a struck a 2005 Volvo head-on.

The driver of the Hyundai, 18-year-old Michael Phillips of Bumpass, died at the scene.

The driver of the Volvo, 28-year-old Sara D. Thaw of Bumpass, was transported via med-flight to UVA Hospital with serious injuries. A one-year-old occupant was properly restrained and not injured.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

“We always preach wear your seat belts. This is a very unfortunate tragic situation. Fortunately for the one-year-old, they were in the proper child restraint device and that’s very important,” said Virginia State Police Public Information Officer Stephan Vick.
