Armed suspect injured after officer-involved shooting in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — One person is recovering in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting on Richmond’s southside Tuesday night.

Officers first responded to a domestic situation around 10:23 p.m. at the Warwick Place Apartments in the 1800 block of Fernbrook Drive. Neighbors reported hearing screams outside the residence. Two officers went inside the apartment after they heard an argument going on.

Once inside, there was an encounter with an armed person inside assaulting a female and brandishing a handgun. Police then shot the armed person twice.

Police have identified the suspect as Jamar D. Coward, 30, and charged him with domestic assault in connection to the incident.

That person was taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to be okay.

A force investigation is now underway. Police tell us that could take days or weeks to complete.
