Family calls Richmond shooting victim ‘great dad’

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Police say they got a call about a shooting at the Woodland Crossing apartment complex off of Walmsley Boulevard around 11:30 Monday. Two people were shot and both were transported to the hospital. While one victim is expected to be OK, police say 26-year-old Brandon Harvey died later that day from multiple gun shot wounds.

8News spoke with Harvey’s uncle, who tells us he was a good person and can’t understand why anyone would shoot him. He says the family is devastated, including his seven-year-old daughter. His uncle says she loved her father and calls Harvey a great dad.

Richmond police say it’s the second time this year someone has been shot in the apartment complex. Someone was shot during a robbery back in January. Richmond police say they did have an agreement with the complex where off duty officers would patrol the area several years ago but that agreement expired. Some residents say things have become more dangerous since officers stopped patrolling.

“When RPD stayed down here they made their presence known. We didn’t have this. We didn’t have all of this drama and violence going on and shootings and everything else and I wish, I honestly I wish I really could move somewhere to where it’s safe,” said resident Chrystal Miller.

Richmond Police continue to investigate what happened Monday. If you have any information you’re asked to call Crimestoppers at 780-1000.
