Henrico School Board considering modifying student holiday due to bike race crowds

HENRICO, Va. (WRIC) — The Henrico School Board will consider changing a half day scheduled during the UCI Road World Championships to a full student holiday at the next work session.

More than 450,000 spectators are expected in the Richmond area between Sept. 19 and 27 for the big bike race. Visitors from all over the world will be filling local roads that week, making it a challenge to keep school bus routes on schedule in some parts of the county.

School officials say the crowds may give Henrico County students an extra morning off on September 23.

The school board will discuss converting the scheduled half-day student holiday into a full student holiday at its 1 p.m. work session on August 13. The Wednesday half-day student holiday had already been scheduled to allow for staff planning and development time, and falls during the bike race by happenstance.

If the calendar adjustment is approved, Sept. 23 would become a full day off for students and would remain a planning and development day for HCPS employees.
