RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A federal judge decided Thursday that Confederate flag license plates on vehicles in the Commonwealth would be recalled.

Judge Jackson Kiser officially entered his order granting Attorney General Mark Herring’s motion to dissolve the injunction that had allowed the use of the Confederate battle flags on Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) specialty license plates.

Because the injunction has been dissolved, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin recalling and replacing existing license plates with ones that comply with Virginia law.

Information on how the DMV would begin to execute the recall process was not immediately available.

Members of the heritage group say the emblem won’t go down without a fight.

“There’s nothing in there that I could find that you can’t put a sticker on something on the plate as long as you don’t obscure the plate itself,” said Dexter Oliver of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. “Get a regular license plate and get a decal and put that on the plate.”

There are nearly 1700 SCV members with specialty plates in Virginia.  They’ll have 30 days to return them for plates without the flag.
