VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) – The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office says its officers found 18 inmates who serve their sentences on the weekend were violating the terms of their agreement.
Authorities searched 91 inmates arriving for weekend jail time on Friday night. The majority of violations were for being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The goal of the weekend inmate program is for people serving time for nonviolent offenses to maintain weekday employment. Conditions for the program include consenting to a strip search, medical screening and arriving sober each Friday night.
The sheriff’s office says those who were found to violate the jail’s rules were ordered to serve out the remainder of their jail time without the weekday break.
