PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) — A raccoon found in southside Virginia has tested positive for rabies.
The Crater District Health Department in Petersburg says the raccoon was found in Hopewell. The department advises residents or visitors who may have been exposed to the raccoon to notify local health officials and animal control.
Health officials in Hopewell also asked pet owners to ensure their pets’ rabies shots are up to date.
It marked the fifth positive rabies case in the Crater Health District this year. It serves the cities and counties of Dinwiddie, Emporia, Greensville, Hopewell, Petersburg, Prince George, Surry and Sussex.
