Bug swarm in Texas is so big, a weather radar picked it up

(WRIC) — Weather radar has picked up thousands of insects flying over Knox County, Texas.

The National Weather Service of Norman, Oklahoma reported that their radar was picking up the large swarm of grasshoppers and beetles.

Forrest Mitchell, Observations Program Leader at the National Weather Service of Norman, Oklahoma told Popular Science that it’s difficult to determine the specific amount of bugs based on the radar image. It depends on the size and proximity of the insects as they fly, says

The bugs are swarming from the ground up to 2,500 feet, Mitchell says, covering a distance of over 50 miles.

“It’s fairly common during the warm season,” says Mitchell. “It’s a testament of the sensitivity of the radars we use.”
