RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – A driver has been charged and a 5-year-old girl is recovering at VCU Medical Center after being struck by a car on the 1100 block of Dove Street around 7:30 Wednesday night.

Officers arrived on scene and found a female child who was suffering an injury to her leg. She was transported to a local hospital with an injury which was not considered life threatening at the time.

Witnesses reported a vehicle, a Honda sedan, had left the scene. Around 9 p.m., the driver called the police to turn herself in and gave her location, police say. Officers arrived at the location of the call and arrested the driver.

25-year-old Tammy L. Burke of the 2400 block of North Avenue, was charged with felony hit and run and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

The little girl is expected to make a full recovery.

One eyewitness said that the little girl was crossing the street when the driver of an oncoming car struck her, sending her flying.

“She got hit really fast and she just went in the air,” said Erin Evans. “She went up and came down. She went far up and came down. It’s a little girl, so it’s just like, you know, tragic.”
