Low gas prices means more drivers hitting the highway for July 4th

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — 1.2 million Virginians are expected to travel this week for the Fourth of July holiday. AAA is predicting the highest number of holiday travelers since 2009.

Trip Advisor has been looking into people’s 4th of July travel plans and they say yesterday was set to be the busiest travel day for the holiday. So, if you still haven’t left yet and are heading out at some point today, you might catch a break on the roads in that sense.

Some more good news for travelers: Most drivers will likely pay the lowest Independence Day gas prices in at least five years.

In Virginia, your average price for regular unleaded gasoline has dropped slightly to $2.59 a gallon. That average is even lower in Richmond at $2.53 — almost a dollar difference from this time last year.
