Police: Woman defrauded by suspect impersonating officer

CHESTERFIELD CO., Va. (WRIC) — Police are investigating an incident in which a woman was defrauded of money by an unknown suspect claiming to be an employee of the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, and unknown suspect called the victim Tuesday afternoon and told the woman she had missed grand jury duty and was required to pay a fine. The woman sent the suspect an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect also told the victim to go to the Sheriff’s Office to have charges against her dropped. She realized she had been defrauded when she went to the Sheriff’s Office.

Also on Tuesday, police received two additional reports of a similar fraud attempt. In those incidents, the people who received the phone calls did not send the suspects any money.

The Chesterfield County Police Department and Sheriff’s Office are reminding residents that at no time will either agency ask that fines be paid in this manner. Investigators are asking that anyone who has received a call of this nature contact police immediately.
