RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — If you live on or near the Monroe Park campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, you may notice a few more police in the area than you’re used to, and it all stems from a rash of robberies to hit the campus over the weekend.
First, on Saturday night, a man was robbed at gunpoint. The two suspects involved demanded money, the man’s keys, and cell phone.
Then early Monday morning, shortly after midnight, another man was the victim of a strong armed robbery and had his backpack and tablet stolen.
“I’ve seen actually a shooting happen right on broad street, and you know, that type of stuff does happen,” said Mark Hardison, a senior at VCU.
VCU Junior, Nekki Soltanian expressed her concern saying,”It’s kind of scary because it’s happening right where we basically live and where we’re going, but you know, that’s life. we can’t just stop what we’re doing.”
There are now seven suspects in total still on the loose from those incidents. To help keep people safe, Richmond Police and VCU Police have increased their presence on and around campus.
Junior Morgan Greenwalt says,”It’s nice to see that even during their off season, they’re still on their game.”
If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, VCU offers the following safety tips:
- Cooperate, do not resist, and take mental note of everything.
- Trust your instincts and choose safety over courtesy.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
