CALEDONIA, Mich. (WOOD) — A wife and mother from Caledonia who had been battling cancer along with her husband died on Sunday.
Shelby Offrink was diagnosed with inoperable intramedullary glioblastoma, a form of cancer in her spine and brain, in March 2014.
About six months after her diagnosis, her husband Ben learned he had Hodgkins lymphoma for the third time. He’d gone into remission 20 years earlier.
At the same time, they were raising two beautiful young daughters, Maeve, 4, and Hazel, 18 months.
Shelby began writing about her journey not long after her diagnosis on a CaringBridge site. At the start of this year, her friends took over for her and created a YouCaring page to share the Offrinks’ story and collect donations.
But on Monday, her friends shared the sad news that Shelby had passed away:
It is with completely broken hearts that we need to let you all know that Shelby passed away yesterday. She was at peace, surrounded by her closest family. Both Maeve and Hazel gave their mom a kiss and hug as Shelby took her last breath. We are grateful that she is now pain free, running around and making tons of friends in Heaven already, but we will forever miss her quick wit, humor and love for others. There is a party in Heaven, but a hole in our hearts. Funeral information will be sent out at a later time. We miss you, Shelby. You were the best friend we could ever have. You left this world just as you lived – with heart, love, determination, fearlessness and no regrets.
