State trooper hospitalized after being struck while directing traffic

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Trooper A.L. Benner was transported to MCV hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries according to authorities. Investigators told 8News that the trooper was struck while conducting traffic control just after midnight Wednesday just north of the Ladysmith Rest Area in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95.

State Trooper Sgt. Steve Vick said Benner and another state trooper were trying to steer traffic away from six inches of water that was pooling on the interstate.

“While they were doing this one of the troopers glanced back, saw a tractor trailer coming straight at them,” Vick explained. “He yelled at the other trooper, he immediately got over the guardrail as the other trooper was running the tractor trailer struck the state police cruiser then went off the cruiser and struck a white Ford pickup which was up helping set up the cones.

“The pickup was unattended, but as the trooper was running the second trooper was running from that the pickup truck struck him knocking him over the guardrail.”

Authorities said the driver of the tractor was 67-year-old Nicholas Coia of Florida; he was charged with reckless driving.
