CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police have identified the State Trooper injured Wednesday morning after a series of traffic accidents.
Virginia State Police tell us a state Trooper’s cruiser was struck while conducting traffic control around 12:18 a.m. Wednesday.
Troopers were called to direct traffic because of high water on the highway.
A tractor trailer traveling south struck two state police cars with emergency lights activated along with the Trooper directing traffic. The tractor trailer then hit a contractor’s pick up truck that was in the lanes on scene assisting with the road closure. Police say the truck lost control as it approached where Troopers were directing traffic. The impact then forced the pick-up into the state trooper, knocking the trooper over the guardrail and into the grass median. The tractor-trailer then struck the guardrail on the left side of the road.
Trooper A.L. Benner was transported to VCU Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries. He was the only one injured at the scene.
The driver of the tractor trailer, 67-year-old Nicholas J. Coia, of Florida, was charged with reckless driving.
