CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) — A very, very lucky Chesterfield County man claimed a lottery prize of $3 million on Wednesday.
It’s a triple play for Don Wilson, of South Chesterfield. Wilson won the $1 million prize three times in last week’s Mega Millions drawing.
The winning tickets were bought at the Kangaroo Express, located at 891 Temple Avenue in Colonial Heights.
Each of Wilson’s three tickets matched the first five numbers, missing only the Mega Ball number. Additionally, two more of his tickets won $500 each, bringing his total winnings in that one drawing to $3,001,000. His two $500 winning tickets matched four of the first five numbers and did not match the Mega Ball number.
The winning numbers were 2-9-11-22-23 and the Mega Ball number was 12. Had any of his tickets matched all six numbers, he would have won part of a jackpot estimated at $260 million.
Wilson said those numbers were selected because they correspond with family birthdays.
Today, Wilson received his check from Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. The Kangaroo Express store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
Wilson said he has no immediate plans for his winnings and is philosophical about winning such a large prize.
“It’s only money,” he said. “There are more important things in life.”
Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights at 11:00. Drawings are broadcast on 8News, streamed live online here and on the Lottery’s Facebook page. The odds of winning the $1,000,000 prize in Mega Millions are 1 in 18,492,204.
