DALLAS, Tex. (WRIC) — The Virginia Commonwealth Rams defeated Dallas Baptist University 3-1 Monday night to win the Dallas Regional and advance to the school’s first ever NCAA Super Regional.
The Rams will play the University of Miami Hurricanes in a best-of-three series starting Friday in Coral Gables. Games one and two will start at noon and be televised on ESPNU. Game three will only be played if necessary and will also start at noon. It will be televised on either ESPNU or ESPN2.
Miami dominated Columbia 21-3 Monday night to win the regional the Hurricanes themselves hosted.
VCU beat DBU with an early start and a dominating finish. In the top of the second inning, the Rams loaded the bases and got run number one when James Bunn was hit by a pitch and Vimael Machin trotted home. With the bases still loaded, Cody Acker grounded out to second, which allowed another run to score.
The Patriots responded in the fourth with an RBI groundout of their own, cutting VCU’s lead to 2-1.
VCU added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Acker again grounded out to second allowing a run to score from third.
Mills Godwin graduate Matt Lees allowed a single in the ninth inning, but with two outs, shortstop Vimael Machin sprung to his left to field a ground over second base. Despite an awkward throw, Machin made the out, and the Rams celebrated with a dog pile on top of Lees near the pitchers mound.
Coming into the Dallas Regional, VCU had just five wins against teams with an RPI in the top 100. The Rams picked up three in this one weekend.
