Alleged killer could officially go free after court hearing; victim’s family reacts

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) A Chesterfield man found not guilty of a horrific murder by reason of insanity could soon officially be free. On Thursday morning, 57-year old Harvey Glanton will go before a Chesterfield County circuit court.

In 2004, witnesses convinced a judge that Glanton believed he was killing a chicken as he beat a man to death. He is now asking to be released from supervision because of his improved mental condition. Relatives of the victim say they are outraged by the possibility.

“I do believe that such a heinous murderer shouldn’t be allowed to walk free,” says Jennifer Pyles, step-daughter of the victim, Daniel Balbaugh. “I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night knowing he’s walking free.”

Glanton was committed to Central State Hospital after his 2004 acquittal and placed under constant watch. Over the last 11 years, his attorney says he has slowly been given more freedom and is no longer a threat to himself or to the public.
