RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – The Blue Bell Ice Cream distribution center on Laburnum Avenue will soon close, leaving 30 to 40 employees without a job.

The Texas-based company began its operation in Richmond in 2013, with a distribution center on Laburnum Avenue in Richmond.

The news of Richmond shuttering its Blue Bell operations base comes after a deadly listeria outbreak which sparked a massive recall of Blue Bell Ice Cream products. A total of 10 people in four states have been sickened by products from Blue Bell; 3 of them have died.

Blue Bell’s CEO announced in recent weeks that the company would be terminating 1,450 employees after the listeria fallout.

According to data released by the Center for Disease Control, cases of Blue Bell ice cream contaminated by salmonella could date back as far as 2010. The FDA also released inspection reports which show listeria outbreaks at Blue Bell’s Oklahoma plant dating back to March 2013.

It will likely take several months for Blue Bell products to reappear on store shelves, as the company has pledged to sanitize 4 production facilities.
