AMELIA, Va. (WRIC) — A man operating a boat drowned after jumping into a lake on an Amelia farm to help another person struggling to swim to the boat.
The victim pushed off from the lake’s shore without paddles for the boat. He called to a person onshore to bring the paddles to him; this person got into the water but became distressed as he tried to swim to the boat.
The victim, who couldn’t swim, jumped in the water to help. Meanwhile, another person onshore entered the water to assist the person bringing the paddles; they were able to get that person to shore.
The same person swam back out into the lake to help the boat’s operator, but was unable to find him after he went under the water.
The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Rodrigo Elizondo, who lived on the farm where the accident took place.
A GoFundMe account has been created to help support Elizondo’s family.
‘This weekend Watkins lost Rodrigo, a beloved member of our team in a drowning accident. We are absolutely crushed by the loss of his constant smile, quiet demeanor, and willingness to help wherever he could. While we are devastated by this tragic loss, we can only imagine what his family is going through; he left behind a wife and two small children. In an effort to send Rodrigo home and help support his family in the upcoming weeks and months, we are putting together this fund. We greatly appreciate any contribution to his memory.’
