Petersburg Police Department

PETERSBURG, Va (WRIC) — Police have arrested 21-year-old Leon Archer of Dinwiddie County as a person of interest in relation to the murder of 19-year-old Shaakira N. Ross.

Reports say Archer is charged with firearm violations including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held at Riverside Regional Jail.

Earlier this month officers were called to the 1800 block of Fort Rice Street for a report of shots fired. Once on scene, they discovered a vehicle with Ross inside who had been wounded by gunfire.

Emergency medical crew transported Ross to Southside Regional Medical Center, where she died from injuries sustained in the shooting.

A celebration of life was held for Ross at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg.

Ross loved music and had dreams of becoming a nurse.

Those who knew Ross said she could brighten your day with a simple smile.

“She’s a beautiful person. She just smiled…when she walked into a room, believe me, she’s going to make sure somebody laughs,” said Alexander Studivant, a family member.

Ross graduated from Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School in June of 2014.
