CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A police situation at the Varina-Enon bridge has shut down part of Interstate 295 for hours on Wednesday.
Authorities say a call came into the Hanover Crisis Center around 1:35 a.m. on Wednesday from a man who said he was on the bridge and was going to jump.
Around 12:30 p.m., the man jumped from the bridge, according to police. When he landed in the water, police say he began swimming and was immediately intercepted by Henrico Police Marine Patrol. He was taken into custody and has been transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
I-295 was closed in both directions for nearly 12 hours.
Lanes on I-295 northbound have since reopened. Southbound traffic lanes on I-295 remain closed due to the ongoing investigation.
Southbound traffic was being re-directed off at New Market Road. Unfortunately, New Market Rd. is currently closed as crews work the scene of an accident.
Try to avoid the area if possible. The best route around this is a lengthy one, unless you pay the toll at Pocahontas Parkway. Otherwise, you’ll have to take I-64 to I-95 to get around I-295.
