CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond and UVa. both find themselves in a tight race for a regional bid in the NCAA tournament. RPI comes into play, both of these teams needed one last solid non-conference win to bolster their chances of making it.
The urgency was clear from the start, Richmond got out in front quickly 3-0 in Virginia’s final home game of the season. The Cavs responded quickly by plating four in the second inning.
A back and forth affair that saw Virginia’s Kenny Towns go 3-for-3, Matt Thaiss hit his 9th home run of the season, and Daniel Pinero getting the go-ahead run home in the bottom of the eighth inning on a base hit up the gap between first and second, wrapping up the contest 8-6 in the top of the ninth.
For Richmond, the Spiders were lead offensively by Tyler Beckwith who hit a solo HR and Matt Dacey grabbing two hits and his team leading 50th RBI of the season.
It’s the sixth year in a row the Spiders have fallen to the Wahoos.
Up next for both teams: Virginia travels to Chapel Hill for their final series of the season against North Carolina; Richmond heads to Davidson to try and stay in the running for the top seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament.
