CHESTER, Va. (WRIC) — L.C. Bird star Kenny Williams looked forward to wearing the black and gold and wreaking havoc at the Siegel Center, but when Shaka Smart bolted for Texas Williams requested a release from his scholarship and signed on to play at North Carolina.
“It was as if everything blew up,” Williams said Wednesday. “It was just I had to start from scratch and build everything up from the foundation.”
Williams told 8Sports more teams recruited him the second time around than before he committed to VCU in the fall of 2014. He says he got calls from Virginia, Florida, Kansas, and Louisville among others. He ultimately chose UNC because it was a place he’d always wanted to play.
“Having that North Carolina on my chest and playing in the Dean Dome, that’s one of the things I’m looking forward to the most because I know that atmosphere gets crazy,” Williams said.
Williams plans to enroll at Chapel Hill in June for summer school. He is not disappointed in Smart for leaving VCU, but he is disappointed that his family will not be able to attend every home game as they would have been able to on Broad Street.
“They’ll still be able to make it to a couple because Chapel Hill’s not that far down the road,” Williams said.
