Couple charged after officers find them unresponsive in car with child

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A couple is facing drug and child endangerment charges after they were found unresponsive in their car at the Church’s Chicken in Richmond’s Southside Wednesday afternoon.

Officers charged 25-year-old Ryan P. Rich, of the 400 block of Westover Hills Boulevard, and 30-year-old Sarah D. Wheeler, of the 400 block of Westover Hills Boulevard, with possession of heroin and child endangerment.

Police say that when officers arrived on scene around 5:30 p.m. in the 00-hundred block of Jefferson Davis Highway, they found a male and female, both unresponsive, in their car with a child in the backseat.

Both parties received drug treatment on scene, and the male was eventually transported to VCU Medical Center for further treatment.

Police say they removed the child from and are looking to place it with other family members.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
