New Walmart opens on VCU’s campus Wednesday

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A new Walmart opened on VCU’s campus on Wednesday.

The store is located on West Grace St. between N. Harrison and Shafer Streets on the first floor of 912 West Grace Street, a building owned by VCU. The building also holds classrooms and offices.

The 4,100 square foot is a part of a Walmart pilot program called “Walmart on Campus.” The program spawned from Walmart’s idea to open smaller format stores on college campuses to offer more convenient options for students.

Last year, there were several protests and an online petition against plans to build the Walmart. Opponents argued that the store will be devastating to local businesses.

There were two protesters at this morning’s ribbon cutting ceremony.
