SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A man was arrested in Spotsylvania for the scalding of a 9-month-old infant, police say.
24-year-old William Robert Schmuhl was arrested and charged with felony child abuse.
Police say the incident took place at the Super Value Inn in Spotsylvania last Tuesday.
Police say that the Spotsylvania County Child Victim Unit was summoned by hospital staff after a 9-month-old child was brought to the emergency room suffering from “extensive immersion type burns,” common to dipping the child into scalding hot water, according to police.
The child was stabilized and was transferred to VCU Medical Center for advanced burn treatment and possible surgery.
Detectives conducted interviews of the suspect, who police say is not the paternal father of the child, and the mother, who is the current girlfriend of the suspect. Additionally, a search warrant was executed at the hotel room where the couple had been staying.
After a thorough investigation, police arrested Schmuhl.
Spotsylvania Co. Sheriff Harris related that, “this investigation is still ongoing and additional charges may be brought against Schmuhl and anyone else who may have been involved and had knowledge of the crime, failing to summon law enforcement or assistance for the child.”
Schmuhl is being held behind bars at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
