Former Ravens player Ray Lewis condemns Baltimore violence in video message

BALTIMORE, Md. (WRIC) – “Young kids, you gotta understand something. Get off the street, violence is not the answer, violence has never been the answer.”

Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis sent a powerful message directly to the citizens of Baltimore in a video he shared on Facebook Tuesday.

“No way, no way, no way this can happen in our city,” Lewis says passionately. “Young kids, you gotta understand something. Get off the street, violence is not the answer, violence has never been the answer. Freddie Gray, we don’t do nothing for him doing this.”

The city of Baltimore erupted in violence Monday night following the funeral of Freddie Gray, a man who died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody. In several violent clashes between authorities and rioters since then, at least 20 police officers have been hurt; 1 remains in critical condition after a CVS was set ablaze by rioters on Monday.

On Tuesday, President Obama remarked on the hostile environment and ongoing problems in the city. “There’s no excuse for senseless violence,” President Obama said.

Lewis says it’s time to clean up the streets of Baltimore and he urges the entire community to make an effort.

“We got to go back to the beginning. It takes a village, it takes a whole village to raise one child. We got to redefine what this looks like. We got to redefine what building Baltimore looks like. Cause too many people put in real sweat, real tears, to make our city a better place.”

Fans praised Lewis’ outspoken stance, commending him for being so vocal in his plea to end the violence. The video has been liked over 320,000 times and has thousands of comments.
