HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A fight between two female students led to a ‘very uncharacteristic day’ at Brookland Middle School in Henrico.
One of the females involved in the fight was sent to the hospital with minor injuries.
In a statement sent to school parents Thursday, Principal Nicholas Barlett said one 10-second altercation during a class completely changed how many students decided to act the rest of the day.
Here’s the entire statement from Barlett:
“Good afternoon Cub Family, I am contacting you this afternoon looking for your support because we had a very uncharacteristic day at Brookland.
This week we received our Triennial Safety Audit that looks into all parts of the school and we scored the highest possible score in all areas. While we are preparing for SOLs and on the heels of this recognition of the steps we have taken to make sure safety is a focus at Brookland we had one 10 second altercation during a class change that completely changed how many of our students decided to act for the rest of the day.
We have altered some of our procedures to further ensure that students are safe. One of these is that we are going to have a very deliberate and structured dismissal. This may slow down our dismissal so please be patient as we load students on to the busses and allow our parent pick up students go on a staggered schedule.
Tonight, please discuss with your child the expectations that you hold for how we as a community need to act if we are focused on our goals of getting ready for life after school. As is always the case the vast majority of our students have acted admirably during this time but we have students that need to be reminded of the fact that disruptions to our school hurt us all and it will not be tolerated.
Moving forward we will do very regular tardy sweeps to ensure that students are not wasting time on the sidewalk. We have also increased the consequences for instigating and creating a disruption to the school day to include suspension.
As a community we must not let the poor choices of a few take away from the learning environment that we need in order to have a safe place where powerful learning happens.”
Police are continuing to investigate before they decide whether or not to bring charges against the other female.
