Stunning video captured the moment a woman was swept off of a cliff by a wave while on vacation in Ireland.
Apu Gupta, 21, from London, was visiting Ireland’s Aran Islands with her parents when a massive wave swept her off off a cliff and onto the rocks below as her parents watched helplessly from afar.
“I tried to run, but it pushed me straight down. It was like being in a waterfall and that probably cushioned the fall,” Gupta told the Irish Times. “I was so scared because I thought the wave was going to come again.”
Two other tourists visiting the island saw Gupta’s fall and immediately sprang into action, according to the Times.
Seamus McCarthy, a paramedic, rushed over to help when he saw Gupta fall in. McCarthy made a rope out of a jacket, tied it to a backpack and lowered it down to Gupta. The other tourist ran to the nearest home to get help.
Gupta tightened the backpack around her waist while her rescuers pulled her up the cliff to safety.
“We were all very shaken but we just did what anyone would do in that situation. Just try to help out,” McCarthy told the newspaper.
“The water cushioned my fall, so when I finally fell the impact wasn’t as great as it could have been and next to me, there was a boulder and I held onto it,” Gupta said.
Gupta broke her ankle and has some cuts and bruises but is expected to be okay.
Her rescuer will be awarded a medal for his bravery later this year.
