This R2-D2 jet might not fly to Cloud City, but it will be within our own galaxy sometime soon.
On Thursday, Japan’s All Nippon Airways said it’s entered a 5-year ‘Star Wars Project’ that will kick off with a 787-9 Dreamliner costumed as R2-D2, the adorable chirping robot from Star Wars. All Nippon says the jet will start flying on international routes in the fall.
The airline hasn’t disclosed which international routes — or galactic ones — the R2-D2 jet will fly yet. ANA operates nine flights out of North America, including from its hub in Los Angeles. It will launch a Tokyo-Houston route in June.
R2’s blue and white features match ANA’s brand colors and, they say, they like R2’s style: “Highly loyal and whenever he faces challenge, he comes up with an original idea to succeed the mission,” the airline operator’s website reads.
Fans of the movie trilogy nearly had a meltdown over the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was released yesterday.
