PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Hop off interstate 95 in Petersburg at exit 52 and you can’t miss it; There will be many events in Petersburg this weekend.
There will be a half marathon, a barbecue festival, a farmers’ market and civil war re-enactments.
The city is hoping to capitalize on the history in Petersburg. They hope that appeal will increase foot traffic from both tourists and locals.
“We are starting to get more calls from across the country, from people wanting to come here to learn more about the civil war,” says Brian Little, the Director of Cultural Affairs Arts and Tourism in Petersburg.
Restaurant owners have also seen an increase in patrons over the past months and in some cases, over a period of several years.
“Lots of foot traffic,” says David Dj Payne, the owner of Wabi Sabi restaurant. “There are more things going on in Petersburg, there’s barbecue festivals, there’s wine and hops festival,” Payne told 8news anchor Ava-joye Burnett.
City leaders believe this weekend’s events could bring up to 5,000 people to the city. Because of these events, including the inaugural Petersburg Half Marathon and 5K, there will be several road closures. Click here for a link to the those closures.
