ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Four-year-old Bodie, a goat at the Albuquerque Botanic Garden has a set of Van Gogh skills. He’s a painting goat with the art portfolio to prove it.

For the last several months staff member Kristin Wright has been teaching the four legged friend how to paint.

“It was unbelievable.” said Lynda Shey, who watched the goat Sunday. “I couldn’t believe that that goat was sitting there painting and it was good. It was pretty with all the pictures. It was different colors,”

Sunday, Bodie, with a paint brush in his mouth, showed off for a crowd of people at the Rio Grande Heritage Farm.

“To see a goat actually hold a paint brush in his mouth and paint and he has some accuracy with it and some talent yeah that’s unique,” said Albuquerque Zoo Manager Lynn Tupa.

The BioPark says painting is more than just a hobby for animals like Bodie.

“We don’t want them to get fat so just giving them food is not the only option so getting them to use their brains and to figure things out keeps them happier and healthier,” said Tupa.

For Bodie it’s all about the splash of color, but his paintings have some people seeing green. We asked one woman how much she would be willing to pay for a painting.

“It depends on the size and the subject,” said Shey. “If he was painting one of the sheep maybe a couple thousand.”

Bodie’s paintings are up for sale at the New Mexico BioPark Society. They go for about $40.
