A puppy named Timmy is recovering after he fell about 50 feet down an old well casing and had to be rescued in California.

Fire officials say that the pup dropped into the uncovered metal pipe on Tuesday in a garage in Fresno. The pipe was about 8 inches in diameter.

It took firefighters about an hour to recover Timmy, who appears to be a shepherd mix and only a few months old, according to The Fresno Bee.

Fire crews lowered a knotted rope into the hole, looped it around the puppy’s legs and torso, and pulled him to safety.

Fresno Fire Department spokesman Pete Martinez says the puppy likely was stuck in the hole for a few hours before his family heard him crying.

Timmy was unharmed and the pipe has since been covered.
