MADISONVILLE, TN (WRIC) – It was already miraculous that Sharista Giles woke up from a coma after surviving a car accident. Even more amazing? She gave birth to a baby boy before she regained consciousness.
Giles, 20, was five month pregnant when the accident occurred in December. It left her in a coma, fighting for her life. Doctors didn’t expect for the young woman to make it, her aunt Beverly Giles told ABC News.
“The doctors were telling us there was nothing else they could do,” said Giles. “They already gave up hope. We never gave up. She’s fought this hard.”
In January, doctors were forced to deliver Sharista’s baby boy early; he was less than two pounds when he was born. The family has not yet named the child, calling him “Baby L.” He’s a healthy 6 pounds and 4 ounces now.
Sharista’s family moved her into a rehab center last month. On Wednesday, the family was alerted that she was awake.
The entire family rushed over to see Sharista. “The whole place was packed out with family,” Beverly Giles said.
Beverly Giles says Sharista was responsive, blinking and squeezing her family members’ hands. She focused in on her father, especially when he showed her a very special photo.
“He showed her a picture of her baby, and she followed the picture,” Beverly Giles said. “When he turned around to put it back on the bulletin board, she turned her neck, her whole head trying to follow and find the picture again.”
Sharista continues to recover; it’s too soon to determine her prognosis. The family plans to bring home Baby L when he’s strong enough to leave the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
