SILVERTON, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A dog who fell more than 200 feet from a cliff in Santiam State Forest was rescued Wednesday evening by the Oregon Humane Society.

Ranger, an 80 pound Great Dane-Mastiff mix, was rescued by a seven person team after he went missing Tuesday night during a hike with his owner on the Butte Creek Falls trail.

Ranger’s owner returned to the trail Wednesday morning and found him at the bottom of a rocky outcropping. He fell approximately 230 feet.

Rescuers were able to reach Ranger via a trail, but it was too steep for the dog to be brought up on a rescue lifter. To get him to safety, an Oregon Humane Society member rappelled over 200 feet down the cliff by rope and secured the dog in a basket. Ranger was then carried out to the trail head and taken to an emergency veterinary clinic.

He suffered a broken leg and numerous cuts and bruisers, but appeared to otherwise be in good condition.

The dog  did not appear to have any life-threatening injuries.
