HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Powhatan woman was killed in an accident on Interstate 64 on Tuesday morning.
Virginia State Police say that the crash happened around 5:50 a.m. on I-64 westbound at mile marker 197.
Authorities tell 8News that the driver of a 2014 Hyundai Elantra when it ran off the left side of the road, struck a guardrail and spun around before coming to rest sideways in the left travel lane. A 2003 Chevrolet pickup traveling west unable to avoid struck the Hyundai on the driver’s side.
The driver of the Hyundai, who has been identified as 38-year-old Amanda R. Carlton of Powhatan, died at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the 2003 Chevrolet pickup, 65-year-old Joseph E. Huggins, of Quinton, was transported to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. He was also wearing a seatbelt.
I-64 was shut down for hours as crews cleaned up the scene. It has since been reopened.
Police are still investigating.
