Police: Man shot after pointing gun at officers in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — One man is injured after being shot by a Richmond police officer.

It happened at the Richmond Inn & Suites on Midlothian Turnpike, where police say there are big problems with prostitution and drugs.

“He just looked at me and said they shot me for no reason. They shot me for no reason, ” says the suspect’s friend, who identified himself as David.

David says police shot his friend in the parking lot. He admits his friend ran from the officers when they approached him late this morning.

According to Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham, “the officer tried to make contact with the suspect at which time he fled. He fell down, attempted to get up, pulled a firearm from his waistband, pointed it towards the officers at which time one of the officers fired his firearm.”

Chief Durham says the officer shot the suspect in the abdomen. He’s expected to be ok.

He adds officers recovered the man’s weapon and that police approached the suspect after witnessing him doing something suspicious.

“This hotel has been a nuisance dealing with prostitution and drugs. The officers encountered two males they looked like they were doing a hand to hand exchange. They attempted to make contact with one of those individuals at which time he fled,” adds the Chief.

But according to David, “the cop knows darn well he did not see a hand to hand transaction because my fiance was standing here with our baby, he was standing right here, his girlfriend was standing right here and I was standing right here and just like we are, we were talking. That’s it.”

The officers involved in this shooting are veteran officers who have more than five years with the department. Both will be off the street and on administrative duty while this incident is being reviewed.

RPD’s Force Investigation Team along with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office is handling the case.
