RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Fresh off a victory at Martinsville, Chesterfield native Denny Hamlin hand-delivered tickets to both of this season’s NASCAR events at Richmond International Raceway.
Richmond Nation members, who purchased tickets to both the fall and spring races, were expecting to meet RIR President Dennis Bickmeier. Instead, Hamlin, who drives the #11 FedEx Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, stepped out of a FedEx truck to deliver the tickets, take pictures, and sign autographs.
After his busy day, Hamlin sat down for an exclusive one-on-one interview with 8Sports Director Mitch Carr. The interview is will be aired in segments the week of the Toyota Owners’ 400 in April. It will focus on Hamlin’s youth in Chesterfield and how growing up in Central Virginia helped make him the NASCAR star he has become.
Hamlin also talked about his win Sunday at Martinsville in the STP 500.
“It’s been a great race track for us really for the last — forever I guess?” Hamlin joked. “I have a technique there that really seems to work really well.”
One win all but guarantees that Hamlin will make the Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR’s postseason.
“Obviously this is great now that we have a no pressure situation really until the Chase starts to go out and race pretty easy. I’m feeling good after that Martinsville win, I’m looking forward to coming to this racetrack. I’m looking forward to testing here next week to hone in on what we need to do to run well here.”
