8News receives 10 Virginia Associated Press broadcasting awards

The Associated Press​ recognized 8News with 10 awards for their outstanding work on Saturday at the 2015 Virginia Regional Associated Press Awards.

The AP is one of the largest and most trusted sources of independent newsgathering. AP is neither privately owned nor government-funded; instead, as a not-for-profit news cooperative owned by its American newspaper and broadcast members, it maintains its focus on newsgathering and its commitment to the highest standards of objective, accurate journalism.

On Saturday, members of the 8News crew attended the awards luncheon to receive their honors.

Parker Slaybaugh and Kristin Smith received a Meritorious Award from the AP of Virginias for their coverage of the Disappearance of Hannah Graham.

8News photojournalist Abraham Stubblefield received the Superior Award from the AP of Virginias for Best Human Interest Story, “From Dope to Hope.” Abraham shot and edited the story told by Nate Eaton.

Mitch Carr received a Meritorious Award from the AP of the Virginias for his work in Best Sports Feature “VCU cyclist wins national championship.”

News Director Kelly Woodard accepted the Meritorious Award from the AP of the Virginias for Best Effort by an Individual Reporter for Nate Eaton. Nate left 8News in February after he was offered the position of the news director/chief anchor at Riverbend Communications in Idaho. We miss you, Nate, but your legacy lives on!

8News investigative reporter Kerri O’Brien and photojournalist Forrest Shelor received the Superior Award from the AP of the Virginias for Best Investigative Report, “Partying on your Tax Dollars.”

Meteorologist Matt Dinardo received the Superior Award from the AP of the Virginias for Best Effort by an Individual Weathercaster.

Meteorologists Tim Pandajis and John Bernier both received the Meritorious Award for Best Effort by an Individual Weathercaster from the AP of the Virginias.

All in all, 8News took home 10 awards. We’re tremendously proud of our awesome team and all the incredible work they do!
