RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Police have captured a convicted sex offender after he escaped custody Thursday.
Authorities were searching in the area of the 2500 block of Professional Road for Virginia Center for Behavioral Rehabilitation inmate Robert Hanna, a 54-year-old convicted sex offender.
Hanna was found near Lansdale and Forest Hill Avenue.
Authorities say that at about 8:23 a.m. on Thursday, Hanna assaulted a female guard at a treatment facility on Professional Road. An eyewitness, who did not wish to reveal their identity, told 8News reporter Mark Tenia that Hanna then began unshackling himself before trying to drive away in a van. When the suspect couldn’t get the van started, he fled on foot.
That’s when the female guard yelled to call Virginia State Police because an inmate had escaped, the eyewitness said. The female guard had some bruises.
Hanna has been convicted in York County for one count of abduction. He was also convicted of attempted rape in Newport News. He’s described as a white male, about 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 3 inches tall and over 200 pounds. He is bald and was wearing blue jeans and a brown jacket.
Thompson Middle School and Huguenot High School were both placed on lock down as a precaution, school officials say. Both schools have since lifted the lock downs. Schools will release as normal.
