Animal rescue group needs help to stay open, save lives

For the Love of Poodles & Pooches Founder Terri McDonnell says her rescue only has enough money to stay in operation about another two weeks.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A West End animal rescue group desperately needs your help to stay open and save lives. For the Love of Poodles & Pooches only has enough money to stay open for about another two weeks.

Right now its kennel at Barker’s Inn is filled with puppies and dogs that were just on death row at kill-shelters, mostly in rural parts of Virginia.

“They’re just all so sweet and deserve a second chance,” says Caitlyn Drown, who adopted her dogs Angel and Ernest from this organization.  “I’d hate to see them not here.”

For the Love of Poodles & Pooches is on the verge of closing after a few sky-high veterinarian bills drained the bank account.

“It was kinda panic mode for us, and that’s kinda where we are now,” explains founder Terri McDonnell.

McDonnell adds that this rescue takes in animals that some others have to pass up.  “We thought about changing the name of our rescue to Bleeding Hearts because we tend to take in some dogs that need medical care.”

Those dogs include 8-year-old Pom who had Pneumonia and was so badly neglected that his trachea collapsed.  Domino the Pit Bull Mix is deaf but is already mastering sign language training.

Kennel Manager and Board Member Vanessa Remis hopes to continue her work with Domino and others out there who need help.  About the nonprofit’s potential closure she says, “It would be sad.  I love to help the dogs, I mean, that’s why I do what I do every day and come in here and try to help them because we love them and want to save them.”

For the Love of Poodles & Pooches has saved 450 dogs since opening two years ago, but now this rescue needs some rescuing of its own.

“When facilities like ours can’t survive, that means dogs won’t survive and that would break our hearts,” says McDonnell.
