RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — New documents were released Wednesday in connection to the trial of former Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife.
The affidavit was written and sealed months before the couple’s trial began and has been preserved since then. The new documents lay out what Maureen McDonnell would have testified to if she and her husband were tried separately.
According to the court documents, Maureen would have testified that her husband was unaware of much of her relationship with Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams, including her shopping trip to New York.
Documents say that Maureen was also planning to testify that Bob McDonnell knew nothing about gifts from Williams or his wife. The documents say that Maureen was going to say that she concealed a Star Scientific stock purchase from her husband as well.
A jury in September found McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, guilty of accepting more than $165,000 in loans and gifts – including a Rolex watch and designer clothing – in exchange for promoting a nutritional supplement marketed as a miracle cure by Star Scientific Inc.
Both Bob and Maureen are actively trying to appeal the convictions.
We’re going through the rest of the documents and we will have more tonight on 8News at 5.
