Community meetings planned to allow Richmonders to weigh in on Shockoe Bottom development

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — On Wednesday, Richmonders will have a chance to join the conversation about alternate plans for development in Shockoe Bottom.

The organizations behind the meeting say nobody wants a baseball stadium in The Bottom… but what do they want instead? That’s what the community is gathering to brainstorm about at tonight’s session.

The Sacred Ground Historical Reclamation Project and the Virginia Defender newspaper are hosting the brainstorming sessions. They say the land in Shockoe Bottom is sacred ground and should be memorialized, not used for playing sports.

The first meeting to discuss other ideas of developing the area is scheduled for tonight. If this is something you want to contribute to but can’t make it out tonight, never fear — there are more meetings being held.

After the meetings, the group plans to combine all the proposals and hold a meeting so residents can vote. Then the next step is formally presenting the plan to the city.
