SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Spotsylvania woman has been charged with second degree murder after what was originally thought to be an accidental shooting.
Police say that around 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, officers were called to a home in the 6000 block of Harrison Road. Authorities say that 37-year-old Laurence Marie-Flora Smith, of Spotsylvania, called and told dispatchers that she had just accidentally shot her husband.
Patrol units from the Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the shooting. Upon arrival, deputies found the victim, 44-year-old Sean Smith, laying on the ground, dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
The couple’s two young children, who authorities said were home at the time of the shooting, are now staying with relatives.
Laurence Smith, the victim’s wife, was taken to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning. Detectives also conducted a forensic crime scene investigation at the residence.
Based upon statements made by Laurence Smith, along with several interviews and forensic evidence recovered at the scene, detectives presented the evidence to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.
Laurence Smith was subsequently arrested and charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
She is currently being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
