RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Selection Sunday for the 2015 NCAA Tournament has come and gone, and three teams from the state of Virginia are going to the big dance!
Virginia Cavaliers (29-3, 16-2)
The Wahoos’ loss to North Carolina in the ACC Tournament semi-final hurt their chances of getting a coveted #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Ultimately the selection committee placed them as the #2 seed in the East Region, where they will play the #15 seeded Belmont Bruins to open March Madness action in Charlotte, NC on Friday March, 20th.
VCU Rams (26-9, 12-6)
Selection Sunday was a day many won’t soon forget not for making the NCAA Tournament for a 5th straight year, but for winning the program’s first Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship in three straight appearances over Dayton. As a result of a stellar run to the A10 title, the selection committee placed VCU as the #7 seed in the West region. The Rams travel to Portland, OR to face the #10 seeded Ohio State Buckeyes on Thursday.
Hampton Pirates (16-17, 8-8)
Congratulations are in order for the Hampton Pirates who made the NCAA Tournament by winning the MEAC Tournament. It will be the team’s fourth tourney appearance in school history, as they will participate in the play in game for the #16 seed in the Midwest Region. The Pirates will face the Manhattan Jaspers in Dayton, OH on Tuesday. The winner will face the #1 overall seed in this year’s tournament, the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats on Thursday.
