Dozens gather at Siegel Center Sunday to congratulate VCU Basketball on A-10 title

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The VCU Rams are still on a high after becoming the Atlantic 10 Conference champions.

A large crowd gathered at VCU’s Siegel Center Sunday to welcome the Rams’ men’s basketball team back from their championship run this weekend.

The Rams won four games in four nights, ending with a 71-65 triumph over Dayton in the tournament final on Sunday.

Sunday’s victory gave the Rams their first A-10 championship since joining the conference three years ago.

The seventh seed in the NCAA tournament means VCU will go on to play Ohio State on Thursday afternoon. That game will be in Portland, Oregon.

8News was live at the Siegel Center when the team arrived to a large and energetic crowd including VCU alum Patrick Kunkowski.

“Hoping everybody understands these guys are amazing,” Kunkowski said. “Best thing in Richmond. This is Richmond’s team.”

Shaka Smart, head coach of the team, told 8News how it felt returning to home base after the win.

“Just appreciative of everyone coming and I’m so glad we were able to bring the Atlantic 10 Championship back to Richmond, more importantly back to VCU.”
