RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The teen charged with murdering 8-year-old Marty Cobb appeared in court Tuesday.
A pre-trial motions hearing took place today for Mairese Washington, who faces charges of murder, malicious wounding and strangulation in connection to the May 1, 2014 death of Marty Cobb and the alleged attack on his sister.
Washington’s lawyers asked the judge in the case to allow the teen to be arraigned on the charges again. Washington plead not guilty to all charges.
Yesterday, Marty would have celebrated his 9th birthday. Instead, his family held a vigil in his honor with dozens showing up to share memories about the young boy.
Washington, who was 17-years-old at the time he was charged, is being tried as an adult. Charges had been temporarily dropped against the 17-year-old so that prosecutors could wait for forensic results.
Cobb’s family says that he and his sister were playing on railroad tracks by their home when they say Washington sexually assaulted Cobb’s 12-year-old sister. Marty’s family says that’s when Marty stepped in, attempting to protect his sister, and was killed.
Another pre-trial hearing is set for May 21.
