ACLU Says Revoking Redskins’ Trademark Would Be Violation of Rights

Despite previously calling it offensive, the ACLU has come out in support of the Washington Redskins when it comes to a court debate over the team’s name.

The ACLU filed papers supporting the team’s position that canceling the Redskins’ trademark violates the team’s free speech rights.

Last year, a federal panel ruled the trademark should be canceled, which the team challenged.

The ACLU has joined others calling on the team to change its name because it’s offense, but says the government cannot cancel the trademark simply because of the name.
